The idea of being stranded alone on a desert island never bothered Jack Charlton. If anything, Big Jack was more than up for giving it a go. Given a choice of what book to take with him while appearing on the BBC Radio show Desert Island Discs in 1996, Charlton chose an Encyclopaedia of How to Survive In The Wild. “Just to help me along with what I already know.” His luxury item? That was easy.

“A fishing rod. I have to have a fishing rod. I mean, I expect to get some hooks with it. I can sit all day on the rocks catching nothing and just looking around and relaxing and enjoying it, with the expectancy that I might get something. Of course on a desert island I would have to catch something, so a fishing rod would be a necessity. It would make me very happy.”
