After an objectively excellent campaign, last season ended with a big day out that turned into a non-event. We certainly didn’t hit the lows of the play-off final performances against Watford and Doncaster, yet at no point did we ever threaten to win it. At the end, I sat looking out across a huge corporate bowl, resenting the Southampton fans for having such a cliché of good time. All dancing around to ‘Freed From Desire’, are you? Tin-pot bastards daring to have a nice day out in London. Not for me, thank you. I’m quite content to see us never score a goal in a final and grimly appreciate another season in The Champo. It’s what I wanted, actually. Honest.
