Like having a sex toy stuck in your ear while you’re trying to report the football, the January transfer window can be a major source of irritation. Notwithstanding the ‘don’t go to bed just yet’ and ‘Leeds sign Bent’ tropes that form our cultural heritage, you only have to mention Laurens de Bock, Habib Habibou, Jean-Kevin Augustin, or a host of others to understand why, for many Leeds fans, it’s their least favourite time of the year.
More broadly it’s regarded as a bad time to buy, with fewer players of lesser quality available and selling clubs getting the upper hand on desperate recruiters. Among the risks, however, there are occasional success stories that have changed the course of a club’s history. One of those winter successes was Lee Chapman.
