Leeds United broke records to sign Tony Yeboah in 1995. The £3.4m it cost to make his loan move from Eintracht Frankfurt permanent was the highest transfer fee spent in the club’s history. Not that Howard Wilkinson was bothered. “If you pay five bob for someone and he doesn’t perform then it’s a big disappointment,” said Sgt Wilko. But boy did Yeboah perform. THWACK!

Looking back on Yeboah’s arrival in January 1995 stands in stark contrast to the stance Leeds have taken on mid-season signings in recent years, with both Victor Orta and Angus Kinnear both speaking publicly on numerous occasions about the club’s strategy towards the January transfer window.
