Emily Pilbeam is a Leeds based DJ and, as host of BBC Music Introducing in West Yorkshire, is head scout and first team coach combined for new music in the city.ย You can listen to Emilyโs show on Radio Leeds every Saturday from 8-10pm or whenever you like on the BBC Sounds app, and because football and music just make sense together, read her selections here in TSB.
Three tracks
Mica Sefia – Blame
Mica Sefia is a brand new artist to us at Introducing in West Yorkshire. She is a neo-soul artist who has the voice of an angel. Her first ever upload blew us away and we immediately made it our Track of the Week. Super excited to see whatโs next from Mica! (micasefia.bandcamp.com)
Emmeline – The Dance
Love love LOVE this single from Emmeline. Emmelineโs been sending music our way for quite some time now and Iโve loved all of it, but this latest one is a proper step up from Emmeline. Sheโs been collaborating with Fraser T Smith (who’s worked with the likes of Stormzy, Adele and loads more A-listers) and you can just see that they are a dream pairing. Emmelineโs talent as a poet shines through in her lyricism, and then combining that with the chilled out club beats makes this track a dream from start to finish. (emmelineemmelineemmeline.com)
Bedroom High Club – What You Did
Who isnโt a sucker for a good bit of alt-rock every now and then? I am so obsessed with this band at the minute. Thereโs a 90s kinda grunge-y, kinda indie, kinda pop vibe to what theyโre doing and I love all of it. Big choruses and big riffs are my achilles heel tbh. Hope you love this as much as I do! Three gigs
Nice Swan 10th Birthday, Belgrave, Sunday 30th April
Record label Nice Swan are throwing a 10th birthday party at the end of April! Itโs a big line-up of great up and coming artists that Iโve been loving over the past few years. Liverpool band Courting are headlining and they are LOADS of fun live. Splint and Bug Teeth will be playing too, and Iโve already banged on about them enough in this mag. Be there! (Get tickets)
Yard Act Residency, Brudenell, Monday 8th – Friday 12th May
The boys in Yard Act are taking over Brudenell Social Club for a WHOLE week in May. The weekโs already sold out so tough luck if youโve not got any tickets already BUT I had to tell you about it. Theyโre playing a show every night of the week at Brude, but their support acts are comedians! Lolly Adefope, Rose Matafeo, Nish Kumar and Harry Hill are going to be doing stand-up before Yard Act take to the stage. Lots of other little bits going on throughout the week as well to make it really special. (What’s on at The Brudenell)
In Colour, Brudenell, Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th May
Second year for In Colour Festival and the line-up is CLASS! Itโs a festival that showcases all that’s good in alternative, left-field music currently. Local acts The 113, Askies, Divorce Finance and Spiellman are all worth a watch and loaaaaaaads more too. Good way to spend a weekend if you ask me! (Get tickets)
Spotlight
SELFISH HIGHLIGHT FOR ME! At the beginning of April I had the absolute pleasure of covering Chris Hawkins on the Early Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 6 Music for a full six days! It was a real honour to be asked (and trusted) to be on national bloody radio for that long, and absolute insanity to me to be on the radio just before Annie Mac was on! The real highlight though was being able to introduce a huge audience to all the local Leeds artists Iโve been shouting about for years <3 (You can listen again to these shows for the rest of April)
A song for… Roca & McKennie
Hannah Hu – Possession
I imagine when Hannah Hu wrote this song she didnโt think sheโd be appearing in a Leeds United zine with it being recommended to their midfield. I love Hannah Hu and I am so happy to have this new one from her! The song is obviously nothing to do with having possession in football, but like, it would be nice, wouldnโt it???
