It’s hard to imagine a better way of summing up the experience of following Leeds than simply showing someone that tweet (and the later-revealed unrelated “this is decent” tweet from Jason Pearce) from deadline day 2014. The club had already been fairly busy building up to the final few hours of the window, confirming deals for a couple of loanees, as well as beating Bolton 1-0 in Neil Redfearn’s first game as caretaker manager.
Stephen Warnock scored the only goal of the game, celebrating by holding an imaginary phone up to his ear in a message to Massimo Cellino, who had apparently called phoned David Hockaday at half-time of the 4-1 loss to Watford, demanding that Warnock be subbed off, only to be ignored by his soon-to-be ex-coach. Cellino and his own phone became something of a trend over the next 24 hours, as Leeds’ owner decided this would be the perfect time to fly back to his home in Miami, believing he and his staff would be able to negotiate deadline day perfectly well with a five-hour time difference and a hangover to sleep off.
