The Square Ball: Season 36, Issue 04

Written by: The Square Ball
Artwork by: Eamonn Dalton

This is the fourth issue of The Square Ball’s 36th season and Leeds United’s 2025/26 definitely-not-ending-in-relegation campaign — but we’re not going to worry about that here.

As we all know December 25th is the birthday of our Lord and saviour, Gary McAllister, so what better way to celebrate than a magazine devoted to the midfield that defined Leeds United becoming the Last Champions of English football?

This mini-special, which comes with a choice of one of four covers, features over fifty pages more than a regular issue and has a lovely spine, so the cover price is slightly more expensive at £4 (all that for only a quid extra!). It’s still included in your annual subscription though, so for the best deal sign up to TSB+ Mag and get our magazines for £1 per issue (plus postage).

The magazine will be on sale outside Elland Road at the Crystal Palace game on December 20th — but anyone who pre-orders a copy here will also receive a free pack of Strachan, McAllister, Batty and Speed football stickers.

Inside the mag, you’ll find from your favourite regular contributors:

  • Bryn Law on following Leeds United and Wales and his friendship with Gary Speed
  • The Hitchers’ Niall Quinn tells Rob Conlon about the “bastard hangover” that inspired one of the greatest football songs of all time — ‘Strachan’
  • What we can learn about life from the best and funniest quotes in David Batty’s autobiography
  • Tony Dorigo lifts the lid on sharing pitches and changing rooms with each player
  • Calum Archibald explains why, growing up supporting Leeds and Scotland, Gary McAllister was footballing royalty as both player and manager
  • And lots, lots more

Can I buy the magazine at Elland Road?

As always since 1989, barring pandemics and badly timed World Cups, The Square Ball magazine will be on sale outside Elland Road, for the match against Crystal Palace on Saturday 20th December 2025. Just look out for our windswept but friendly sellers by the Lowfields tunnel, Billy’s Statue, the Kop gates, and anywhere else someone is holding a fanzine in the air, until about fifteen minutes before kick-off.

I’m a TSB+ member, where is the online magazine?

What else is in this issue?

Our now twelve times-nominated and two-times FSF Award winning fanzine, plus one for the podcast and as of 2022 one for ‘Fan Media’, includes lots of pages of articles and artwork about what used to be the pain but now is the glory which still involves pain of being a Leeds United supporter, for more than 100 long, long years.

Can I read something now? For free? Ah go on?

Free to read from this issue is Rob Conlon on a Christmas in Leeds that made the rest of the country take note of their sublime midfield — click here to read that for free.

Also free to read from this issue is Bryn Law on how he needed a friendly face when he first started covering Leeds, and could always rely on Gary Speed. Read that for free here.

You can order paper copies of issue four from our online shop now, and they’ll be sent out as soon as they’re printed. To read a digital version online, please become a TSB+ member, with a one month free trial, here.

As Howard Wilkinson always used to say, thank you for your magnificent support. ⬢
